Cosheston VC School is situated in the small village of Cosheston just outside Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire.

Duties include:

JOB PURPOSE

To work under the direct instruction of teaching/senior staff, usually in the classroom or any other area of the school as required, to support access to learning for all pupils including those identified as having additional learning needs and provide general support to the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom.

We are seeking individuals who can provide effective support to children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) within both a mainstream classroom setting and our dedicated nurture base. The ideal candidates will demonstrate a strong ability to interpret non-verbal communication and behavioural cues, enabling them to anticipate and respond proactively to signs of distress or emotional overload.

Applicants must be adaptable, capable of thinking on their feet, and responsive to the dynamic needs of the learning environment. A commitment to ongoing professional learning is essential, as is the ability to observe and adopt established strategies and best practices demonstrated by colleagues, working independently without the need for continuous direction.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Support for Pupils

  • Attend to the pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid and welfare matters.
  • Supervise and support identified pupils within our base and mainstream class, ensuring their safety and access to learning, including those with additional learning needs.
  • Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
  • Encourage pupils to act independently and provide feedback as appropriate
  • Encourage pupils to behave in an appropriate way in line with established school policy
  • Encourage pupils to develop self discipline, self esteem and independence
  • Assist with the implementation of Individual targets(IEPs)/Behaviour Plans/Personal Care programmes

Support for the Teacher/Senior Staff

  • Prepare classroom as directed for lessons, clear afterwards and assist with the display of pupils’ work
  • Be aware of pupil challenges/progress/achievements and report to the teacher as agreed
  • Undertake pupil record keeping as requested
  • Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour in line with established school policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
  • Relate well to both children and adults and follow the principles of emotion coaching and nurture.
  • Administer routine progress tests as required by the teacher
  • Gather/report information from/to parents/carers as directed
  • Provide clerical/administrative support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, preparing classroom displays etc

Support for the curriculum

  • Support pupils to understand instructions and undertake learning activities as directed by the teacher
  • Support pupils in respect of local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, at all ages as directed by the teacher
  • Support pupils in using ICT in learning activities as directed
  • Prepare, maintain and use equipment/resources as directed by the teacher and assist pupils in their use
  • Support the introduction of the new curriculum, as directed and be familiar with and adhere to the Teaching and Learning Policy.
  • Attend relevant training to support your role as directed by head teacher.

Support for the school

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • Complete all mandatory training and report this as completed to the Designated Safeguarding Officer at the school.
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
  • Attend relevant meetings as required
  • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson time including before and after school and at lunchtimes where required.
  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required.

Specifically, to:

  • Support identified pupils in class.
  • Use Team Teach strategies if necessary and record in bound book.

Essential Criteria:

  • An eagerness to learn more about becoming a Teaching Assistant
  • A passion for working with children
  • Possess relevant qualities including patience and communication
  • Ability to listen and learn from more experienced staff

Desirable Criteria:

  • Any previous experience working with children
  • Any previous experience with special educational needs (SEN)
  • Strong English & Mathematics
  • Communicational skills relevant to both children and adults
  • Competent skills in numeracy, literacy and ICT
  • Ability to self-manage and organise own time
